BEYOND THE BARRIERS Carceral Justice Research Awards 2021
The UC Davis Beyond the Barriers Initiative strives to support and recognize formerly incarcerated and system impacted students, faculty and staff and their important contributions to campus life and research initiatives. It will support this endeavor with innovative research that centralizes and addresses the challenges that mass incarceration and the over-reliance on imprisonment has presented in the state of California and the US.
PURPOSE:
The Beyond the Barriers Carceral Justice Research Awards recognize the importance of research on mass incarceration and the increase of attention of issues related to incarceration and imprisonment including: California Prisons/Jails, Crimmigration, Immigration detention, Race, Gender & Class Inequity, Criminalization, Prisons & the Environment, School to Prison Pipeline, Carceral Systems, Prison Technologies, Prison Industrial Complex, Prison Geographies, California/US Prison & Policing History, Juvenile Justice, Sentencing, Social Justice, Restorative Justice, War on Drugs/Gangs, Carceral Economies, Racial Capitalism, Gender and Sexuality, and Parole and Bail.
Prizes are awarded at the undergraduate, graduate and faculty levels.
ELIGIBILITY:
- Undergraduates may submit research or creative projects on topics aforementioned. Projects may be honors theses, class reports or research papers, video documentary, visual arts projects, collaborative design projects, science and social science research.
- Graduate students may submit master theses, dissertation proposals, completed dissertations, single- or first-authored publications, visual arts projects, documentary work, and/or collaborative design projects.
- Law students may submit articles, papers, visual or design projects, law review articles, or manuscripts.
- Faculty may submit articles, visual or design projects that have been submitted and/or accepted for publication during academic year 2020-2021.
DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS:
May 17, 2021
The submission should represent original work that advances our understanding of the issues in the field of prison and carceral studies. Entrants will be judged on methodological, innovative and substantive quality.
Must be a student or faculty member at UC Davis.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
- Submission Form (Form is linked on the website. Self-submissions are allowed. Simply put your name on both the nominator and nominee fields.)
- Abstract or summary of research not to exceed 350 words

Submissions or nominations must be for works by current UC Davis students and staff in the following categories
Undergraduate Award:
- $1000 prize
- Announcement on the Beyond the Barriers website
- Invitation to speak at the BTB fall research event
Graduate Award:
- $1000 prize
- Announcement on the Beyond the Barriers website
- Invitation to speak at the BTB Fall research event
School of Law Student Award:
- $1000 prize
- Announcement on the Beyond the Barriers website
- Invitation to speak at the BTB Fall research event
Faculty Award:
- $1000 prize
- Announcement on the Beyond the Barriers website
- Invitation to speak at the BTB Fall research event
How to Apply/Nominate:
All materials must be submitted via this form no later than May 17, 2021 by 11:59pm, in order to be considered. Application materials will not be returned.
